Rigorous inspections, thorough reporting and consistent communication are all vital in the hazardous oil and gas industry. Learn how ClearWell Dynamics, formerly Pioneer Energy Services, uses SafetyCulture (formerly iAuditor) and Heads Up to keep employees connected and safe.
75% (and growing) of employees have adopted this new communication method
Operating in the traditionally hazardous oil and gas industry requires rigorous inspections and thorough reporting to maintain safety and compliance. With current industry standards lagging behind recent technological advancements, ClearWell Dynamics saw a way to step into the future and digitize their cumbersome paper-based processes using the SafetyCulture platform.
After seeing the benefits of SafetyCulture to its safety team, ClearWell Dynamics, formerly Pioneer Energy Services, rolled out its usage company-wide. What started as the implementation of a daily checklist, has now become a complete overhaul of safety processes using custom templates for equipment inspections, safety observations and incident reports.
Ensuring safety both in the field and in the office requires teamwork across the organization. ClearWell Dynamics’ many frontline workers, including floor hands, rig operators, derrick workers, rig supervisors and district managers, all utilize SafetyCulture to conduct safety observations and daily equipment inspections.
ClearWell Dynamics’ Safety Director now has the ability to create customized templates and update them as needs change or incidents occur. Instructions and reference photos can be included to make processes clear to all users. Automatic syncing ensures that any updates are immediately rolled out across the team so all inspections meet the same standard.
Having a single source of truth for all crews across ClearWell Dynamics’ organization gives the Safety Team the ability to easily manage inspections by each crew and ensure all safety procedures are being followed. SafetyCulture platform provides easy access to reports that helps streamline the incident investigation process and allows the Safety Team to better assist Field Team members when managing incidents.
“Before implementing SafetyCulture, we had no way to go back through our records and easily find inspections and completed checklists. We were constantly being audited by our customers and didn’t always have the paperwork needed to prove what work had been performed. Using the SafetyCulture platform has completely transformed the way we do business. We aren’t pulling out manilla folders or spending time trying to track down the right paper – everything is right at our fingertips.” – Jonathan Howell, Assistant Safety Director
During COVID-19, daily in-person safety meetings were paused, leaving managers without a way to connect with team members, ensure safety processes were being maintained, and communicate about COVID-19 protocols. Traditional methods of communication became ineffective. Phone calls were too time consuming, emails lacked personality as well as consistent delivery and open rates. ClearWell Dynamics turned to our Heads Up feature to quickly create and send video messages.
“Instead of sending out a lengthy email, we are able to get out in front of everyone digitally. I really think it has helped our organization’s safety culture in general. Our messages can convey a positive attitude and are easy to quickly digest while still getting important info sent out across the organization.” – Jonathan Howell, Assistant Safety Director
Thanks to a simple setup and quick rollout, 75% (and growing) of employees have adopted this new communication method. Now, leaders are using Heads Up for company-wide updates and shoutouts, as well as internal team communication.
“Most of the management team didn’t want to be on camera at first, but now they’ve gotten into it and enjoy making the videos. Not everyone is tech savvy, but the platform is user friendly and has made adoption and ongoing use simple. It is a transformative way for us to reach employees where they are and how they’re already communicating.” – Jonathan Howell, Assistant Safety Director
For ClearWell Dynamics, using Heads Up goes beyond just sending out company updates. Videos range from industry-wide trends and news, to crew-specific callouts for great performance and safety observations. Time-sensitive information such as safety alerts, process reminders, internal reminders, and weekly safety communications are created and shared across the company within seconds.
“The attitude around receiving information has completely changed because we can put emotion behind our Heads Up communications to celebrate outstanding teams and employees,” shares Jonathan.
Team leads, supervisors and even ClearWell Dynamics’ Vice President are creating engaging videos that employees want to see. Before sending, lists can be built to target entire groups or specific users to ensure that the right employees see the right content at the right time.

Users can both view and acknowledge the information sent to them via Heads Up. Notifications of new, unwatched videos stay on the screen for up to three months and reminders can be sent to ensure important information isn’t overlooked or forgotten. Administrators can instantly see who has and hasn’t viewed each message. View and acknowledgement stats are visible in a table format and can be downloaded to a .csv and stored or shared.
As ClearWell Dynamics looks ahead to future growth, the SafetyCulture platform and Heads Up remain vital to the organization.
“One of our goals is to get to the point where we’re sending out micro-learning videos to keep our employees engaged and learning,” says Jonathan. “Continued growth and connection within our company allow us to keep employees safe and ultimately provide better service to our customers.”
