Use this excavation safety checklist from Holland to assess trench and excavation hazards before and during work. Verify a competent person is present, daily inspections are documented, and excavations deeper than 20 feet are engineered. Confirm One Call utility locates, adequate access within 25 feet, perimeter barricades, and proper sloping, benching, or shoring. Check spoil piles are kept 2 feet from the edge, remove surface encumbrances, manage surface traffic exposure, and monitor for water entering the excavation.
