Pre-Use Startup Checklist for Winter Boating
by David Peters, from the Community
This winter pre-use startup checklist guides skippers through a safe, organized departure. Steps include disconnecting shore power and confirming AC breakers, checking battery voltages and DC circuits, starting diesel heat if needed, inspecting the engine compartment for frost, fluids, oil, and coolant, opening the raw-water seacock and clearing the strainer, and reviewing belts and alternator. At the helm, power up ignition, chartplotter, VHF, autopilot, and arm the bilge alarm; note engine hours, fuel estimates, and make a logbook entry. Prepare the cabin by stowing heaters and loose items, inspect and inflate the dinghy to spec, remove flybridge covers, ensure neutral throttle, then start up, enable thrusters, cast off lines, and depart.
