Playground Safety Self-Inspection Checklist
by Lorraine Davies, from the Community
Use this playground safety self-inspection checklist to help maintenance teams and park staff identify and correct hazards in outdoor play areas. Inspect equipment for cracks, rust, loose or protruding hardware, sharp edges, splintering wood, and broken supports. Check swings, slides, and moving parts for secure attachments and proper lubrication. Assess surfacing and surroundings for tripping or slipping hazards, poor drainage, vandalism, and environmental risks such as animal waste or poisonous plants. Verify fences and gates, including pool gates, are latched and self-closing. Record findings, add photos and notes, assign corrective actions, and capture an inspector signature to confirm completion.
