CMS Requirements for Food and Dietetic Services
by Chad Niemeyer, from the Community
This checklist helps hospitals and care facilities comply with CMS Conditions of Participation 482.28 for food and dietetic services. It covers organizational requirements, verification of administrative and technical staff competency, assessment of individual patient nutritional needs, use of therapeutic diets, and documentation practices. It also guides teams to offer nutritionally equivalent substitutes when meals are refused, monitor weight, intake and output, and key lab values, and maintain a current therapeutic diet manual approved by the dietitian and medical staff (updated within five years). Use this tool to standardize compliance checks and improve nutrition care quality.
