This residential standby generator maintenance and testing checklist helps ensure backup power systems remain reliable and safe. Record manufacturer details, model, voltage and kW ratings, and breaker specifications. Perform exterior and interior inspections, check error codes, update firmware, and verify intake and exhaust are clear. Assess battery condition and oil level, then service with oil and filter changes as required. Inspect coolant and radiator for leaks, confirm heater operation on liquid-cooled units, and replace air and fuel filters plus spark plugs as needed. Verify grounding, wiring, and working clearances. Conduct operational tests: manual start, simulate an outage to transfer to generator power for at least 10 minutes, then restore utility. Document voltage, frequency, and load currents, note findings and recommendations, and capture an engineer or operator signature to validate the test.
