Street and Road Works Signing, Lighting and Guarding
by Robert Janes, from the Community
This street and road works audit checklist supports safe temporary traffic management at worksites. It covers staff and vehicle readiness including PPE, IDs, code of practice, vehicle condition, and information boards. The signing, lighting and guarding section checks approach and site signage, sandbag weighting, minimum carriageway and pedestrian widths, safety zone setup, cone size and spacing, lead in and exit tapers, reflectivity, and correct pedestrian barriers. Traffic signal controls are verified for correct system, timing, placement, detection, and battery charge. Documentation requirements include risk assessment, method statement, traffic management drawings, and supervisor sign off. Findings are logged for prompt action, with photo evidence and a sign off section for accountability.
