AFRD Fire Investigator Scene Safety Checklist
by Jeff Cutrer, from the Community
This AFRD Fire Investigator Scene Safety checklist guides responders through a structured scene assessment. Capture location, incident number, weather, and investigators present; note whether ATF is involved. Identify incident type, from residential and commercial fires to vehicle, wildland, dumpster, or HAZMAT. Inspect for physical hazards such as standing water, floor holes, collapse risks, free-standing chimneys, falling debris, slip and trip hazards, and protruding nails or glass, and record mitigation actions. Verify utility hazards, including damaged electrical and gas services, and confirm mitigation by GA Power or GA Natural Gas. Complete an overall safety assessment, brief all investigators on hazards, and confirm the scene is safe for entry.
