Excavation and Trenching Safety Inspection
by Henno Ferreira, from the Community
A practical excavation and trenching safety inspection checklist for construction and civil works. Verify permits and SWMS/PRA, identify and mark services, survey excavations, and confirm emergency rescue plans for trenches over 1.5 m. Check that deeper excavations are shored, battered, or benched; install suitable barricades and stop blocks; display prominent warning signage; and maintain safe spoil distances. Ensure fumes are controlled, materials kept clear of edges, and safe crossings provided with guard rails. Use spotters and radio communication near services, apply lighting and reflective tape on roadways, and have a competent person complete inspections before entry into trenches over 1 m.
