OSHA Excavation and Trenching Worksite Analysis
by philrey erederos, from the Community
Use this OSHA-aligned excavation and trenching worksite analysis checklist to verify site safety before crews begin work. Inspect spoil placement and runoff control, confirm appropriate protection systems for the soil type (sloping, shoring, shielding), and ensure safe entry and exit via secured ladders or engineered ramps. Check vehicle and pedestrian controls, surface crossings, and fencing or barricades. Manage water with diversion and pumping, and assess hazardous atmospheres for oxygen levels and flammables with ventilation and emergency gear on hand. Require daily inspections by a competent person, especially after weather events or site changes. Reinforce general safety practices including PPE and suspended load precautions, and document recommendations and sign-off.
