Planned Inspection for Exploration Drilling Operations
by Gerald Visagie, from the Community
Use this planned inspection checklist to manage safe exploration drilling operations. Record key details such as site location, responsible geologist, drilling company, rig type, and document number. Verify general safety and PPE, fire extinguishers and first aid availability, emergency shutdowns and communications, machine guarding, spill kits, and shelter. Assess drill pad construction, walkways and trip hazards, fire risks, fuel and chemical storage, and site signage. Inspect mast locks and platforms, rod security, compressor leaks and guards, pressure relief valves, hoses and restraints, electrical lighting and cabling. Confirm scaffolding and harness use. Guide drill crews through daily pre-starts, shift crossovers, and pre-shift meetings. Capture hole targets, sample quality control including splitter use and core mark-up, and ensure geology supplies are on hand. Finish with a review and sign-off.
