Hindmarsh Valley Dam Inspection Checklist
by Peter Tsoukalas, from the Community
This annual inspection checklist for Hindmarsh Valley Dam helps operators assess an earthfill dam with clay core and a labyrinth weir spillway. Record dam details and operating status; check weather; inspect the crest for cracks, vegetation, sinkholes, subsidence, ruts, and overtopping; examine upstream and downstream faces for erosion, slips, bulges, animal activity, seepage, and rock facing; review abutments and downstream areas; assess spillway structures and channels; verify inlet and outlet works, valves, and operating mechanisms; review catch drains, access, reservoir rim stability, and communications; confirm power supply and instrumentation including standpipes, piezometers, and seepage weirs; document survey marks and gauge boards; and align surveillance frequencies with ANCOLD guidelines for rainfall, storage level, seepage, pore pressure, displacement, seismological monitoring, telemetry, and visual inspections.
