Canal Bridge Principal Inspection (Arch)
by Fran Littlewood, from the Community
Use this principal inspection template to assess arch canal bridges. The checklist captures functional location, bridge name and number, inspector details, weather, and an inspection summary. Rate condition, consequence of failure, and serviceability, and record BD 21 load assessments and any weight restrictions. Measure key dimensions including abutment-to-abutment, towpath and navigation widths, air draft, skew, ring depth, and parapet and carriageway widths. Document elevations and approaches with photos and drawings. Log defects for abutments (above and below water), deck, wingwalls, parapets, pilasters, buttresses, stringcourses, towpath, road, and footways, with severity and extent grading. Capture materials, scour risk, vegetation, signage, services, and surroundings to support maintenance and safety decisions.
