What is the Living Building Challenge?
The Living Building Challenge (LBC) is a green building certification program designed to inspire the creation of sustainable, regenerative buildings that benefit people and the environment. The program aims to transform the built environment into a solution for climate and resource issues by encouraging the construction of buildings that operate efficiently, generate energy, and promote ecological and social well-being.
Organized by the International Living Future Institute, this green building program evaluates projects across seven performance areas called “Petals”. To be certified, buildings must meet stringent requirements in each area, creating net-positive structures for energy, water, and waste.

7 Pillars of the Living Building Challenge
To achieve LBC certification, buildings must be assessed based on seven performance areas called “Petals”. Below are the different petals that the International Living Future Institute uses to decide if buildings qualify for certification:

The Place Petal encourages building designs that align with their natural surroundings and minimize environmental disruption. It requires projects to be built on non-environmentally sensitive sites and prioritizes habitat preservation and urban agriculture. Energy
The Energy Petal requires buildings to be net-positive in energy use, producing more energy than they consume through renewable sources like solar or wind. This involves integrating energy-efficient systems, reducing overall consumption, and maximizing energy generation on-site. The result is a self-sustaining structure that lessens reliance on fossil fuels and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Health and Happiness
This Petal emphasizes creating environments that enhance the physical and mental well-being of their occupants.
